Story Time!

I would say that one of my party tricks is knowing a person's name after being introduced to them.  It freaks most people out that I can remember meeting them at some obscure event that months ago, but I usually do.  Not this time.  I had met BR last year at Rosh HaShannah services and could not remember his name for the life of me.   I'd see him periodically throughout the year, but he never really got involved until I took him out to coffee.  It still took him awhile to come to anything but services, until I saw him on campus and we talked and joked around for over an hour.  After that he became a regular at my Thursday coffee dates.  He would be patiently waiting for me at our table, cause I was usually late.  BR is a good person to keep in contact with.  He knows a lot of people and will be a Junior this coming year.

It was Sukkot, and I was having no luck at our Sukkah, it was windy and not fun outside.  All of a sudden LW stopped by the table.  We started talking, and it turns out that she had transfered to Pitt from Kent about a year ago.  She had had a bad experience at the Hillel there, and was hesitant about the Hillel here because of it.  We went for coffee, and we talked about her interests, and convinced her that Pitt Hillel was a pretty chill place to be.  She became involved with our Women's group and since she wanted to be a Cantor, started leading our reform service.

It was our welcome back BBQ and I was exhausted because of just getting back from Leader's Assembly, but I met many freshmen interested in becomming involved.  One of them was RC.  She is a great person to keep in contact with.  RC ran for PFYSH board and got the position, but a week later was home with Mono.  RC tried to become involved but it was not til the beginning of the Spring semester that she came back to school.  I would use RC as a great contact to get into AEPhi.  She pledged when she was healthy again.

I'm not sure how I met LR.  I'd seen her on campus alot, but never associated her with a Jewish group.  It turns out that LR and LW were friends.  I was introduced to LR at a Shabbat dinner.   After that we would meet for coffee or I'd see her at Shabbat dinners.  When the topic for the Art Show came up, I knew she'd be interested.  LR became very involved through the art show.  In the 4 years she had been on campus I don't believe that she ever really came to a Hillel event.

MN grew up in Pittsburgh.  She was Israeli, so had her own Jewish community here.  I would see her in the community and on camppus, but not at events.  Then one day we found a time that was convenient for us to meet.  And after that she too became a regular at my Thursday coffees.  She will be around for another few years, and is a great person to have on the Israel committee.
