Women
Last year was the first year the JWO (Jewish Women's Organization) existed. There had been no women's group at our Hillel. Pittsburgh Hillel, in the past, had been unlike many other Hillel's, we had a lot of male students as well as male staff members. I made it my goal as a Woman Fellow to create a safe place for the Women students in Pittsburgh. I am proud to say that last year's JWO became one of the strongest groups in Hillel and that it has continued to this year. To check out some of the great programs we have done please go to the Programs page. The Women's Studies department at Pitt, and the CWO-the Campus Women's Organization are great contacts for doing women's programming on campus. Sheri Minkoff is the Administrative Director of Hadassah for Pittsburgh and last year she worked as the JUC's Development Director. She is a great person to contact for women's programming in Pittsburgh. Her email is bigchapter.pittsburgh@hadassah.org . | |
Freshmen/PFYSH
The PFYSH (Pittsburgh First Year Students at Hillel) group, this year, had become one of the most empowered groups in Pittsburgh Hillel. Once the offciers were elected they decided to become a part of the Jewish Student Union, or JSU. I then started working with Residence Hall students and the PFYSH board worked with empowered freshmen. Two of the PFYSH officers from last year are now on JSU Executive Board. A great contact for working in the Residence Halls is Emily Aubele. She is the Assistant Director of Residence Life. Her office is now located in the lobby of Bruce Hall. Her email address is aubele@pitt.edu. She is the best way to gain access to the Residence Halls.

Arts
Last year the women's group laid the foundation to start an Arts Group. When Dan Lewinter joined our staff, he pushed the idea forward. I worked with Dan and the newly formed Arts group to paint a mural in the JUC's student activity lounge, and various trips to the Carnegie Arts Museum. Our largest project this year has been Yetzirah: Hillel Student Art Show. It was an amazing success. There is an fairly large arts community in Pittsburgh. Carnegie Mellon University has a well known Visual Arts and Dance Department. Through the Universities and the help of the community we engaged many new students through the arts show. We are currently displaying over 20 students' art work. The art work will be on display in the JUC until November 1st. June 1st we are hosting a community-wide Silent Auction. The community will be joining the Hillel in auctioning off the students' artwork. The proceeds benefits the students as well as Hillel.

Sports/JOG-Jewish Outdoors Group
Last year I worked with students interested in physical activities and we created JOG. This year the JSU took over the JOG group, so I worked on individual activities, like the ski trip and self-defense classes, instead. This target group has a lot of potential. For last year's ski trip, I targeted students who were taking a ski class. Ice skating is also a fun and easy program to do. There are two outside ice skating rinks in the winter. One is in Schenley Park and the other is the Rink at PPG Place. To get more information about the rink, check out the site: http://www.ppgplace.com/rink.shtml.
